AWP Caucus Archives

2023: Seattle, Washington

The FUSE Caucus was held at AWP 2023, which ran from March 8-11 at the Seattle Convention Center in Seattle, Washington. The Caucus was held on Thursday, March 9th from 6:30PM to 7:45PM in room 437, Summit Building, Seattle Convention Center, Level 4. At the caucus, students discussed their universities’ publications including The Flintlock, The Blue Route, The Sanctuary Magazine, Rivercraft, The Q&A Zine, Ice Box, and more. They also elected Dr. Jessica Masterton (Assistant Professor at Susquehanna University, director of SU Press) to take on the role of FUSE National director next spring.

FUSE Students Ellie Pasquale, Emily Hizny, Amber Watkin, Hannah Mackey, and Haley Dittbrenner from Susquehanna University hosted a panel titled "How Do You Do, Fellow Kids? A Student-led Crash Course on Social Media Strategy" in rooms 431-432, Summit Building, Seattle Convention Center, Level 4.   

2022: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

The FUSE Caucus was held at AWP 2022, March 23-26, 2022, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Caucus was held Friday, March 25th from 3:20PM to 4:35PM at 126A, Pennsylvania Convention Center, 100 Level.

At this annual AWP event, undergraduate student writers and editors, as well as faculty advisors and mentors, met to network and discuss issues related to the world of undergraduate literary publishing, editing, and writing. The 2022 conference hosted five hundred fifty events, two thousand presenters, and more than eight hundred presses, journals, and literary organizations from around the world.

2021: Virtual
The 2021 FUSE Caucus was held on Zoom on Saturday, March 6th, 2021 from 3:45 pm-5:00 pm (EST). The panel moderators were Jordyn Taylor, Audrey Colombe, Mark O'Connor, and Abigail Cloud. Focus: "Virtually Yours: Connection, Collaboration, and Professional Growth."

2020: San Antonio, Texas
The 2020 FUSE Caucus was held in San Antonio, TX  March 4th-7th, 2020 from 6:30 pm to 7:45 pm in the Henry B. González Convention Center, Meeting Room Level, Room 214B.
At this annual caucus event, undergraduate student writers and editors, as well as faculty advisors and mentors, meet to network and discuss issues related to the world of undergraduate literary publishing, editing, and writing. Organizational updates are followed by an open discussion, elections, and event planning for the upcoming year.

2019: Portland, Oregon
The 2018 FUSE Caucus took place at AWP on Saturday, March 30th, at 7:15pm-8:30 in the Oregon Convention Center, Level 1, F149. 
The sixteenth caucus started with a speed-networking event and included a roll call of members, updates from FUSE National and FUSE chapters, and elections of new national student officers The meeting concluded with a roundtable discussion of current challenges in undergraduate editing.

2018: Tampa, Florida
The 2017 FUSE Caucus took place at AWP on Friday, February 10th, at 6:00-7:15pm in Room 208AB Washington Convention Center. 
The fifteenth caucus included a welcome from Faculty Director Catherine Dent, a roll call of members, updates from FUSE National and FUSE chapters, followed by a "speed networking" event, panel presentation by student National Executives on the meaning of their positions and what they plan to do with them into the future and the rest of their terms, and a roundtable discussion.

2. How do you deal with a small budget question by Queens University Charlotte / Signet (suggestions included using small new printing presses, moving online, working with other departments)

How do you get the word out question asked by 2-year college of Caspar College Wyoming (answers included: hosting events such as open mics; posters; all-campus emails; launch and writing reception party; partnering with LBGT or Arts School; social media such as Facebook; branding such as logo, shirts with logo, color themed materials; bi-weekly blogging

4. How to FUSE? We discussed the Exec staff, In-Design, career center, linked-in profiles, internships, CV workshops

2017: Washington, DC
The 2016 FUSE National Caucus took place at AWP on Friday, February 10th, at 6:00-7:15pm in Room 208AB Washington Convention Center. The fourteenth annual caucus was run by Dr. Amy Persichetti of Cabrini College and included a review of the 2015 Fall Conference at BGSU.

2016: Los Angeles, CA
The 2016 FUSE National Caucus took place at AWP on Friday, April 1, at 6:00-7:15pm in Room 505, Meeting Room Level of the LA Convention Center. The Caucus included FUSE chapter updates, a journal exchange, and a round table discussion of two topics: "Conferences and Networking" and “Will You Look at That?: An Exploration of Aesthetics and Influence.”

2015: Minneapolis, Minnesota

The 2015 FUSE Caucus took place at AWP on Friday, April 10, at 6:00-7:15pm, in Room 200, D&E, Level 2 of the Minneapolis Convention Center.

The thirteenth annual caucus included a welcome from the national president, roll call of members, updates from FUSE National and from FUSE chapters, followed by a roundtable discussion.  This year’s featured topics were “What’s the Big Idea? Do These Young Voices Matter?” and “Editing: How Much Is Too Much?”  National directors announced the date and location of the 4th Annual FUSE Conference: November 5-7, 2015, at Widener University.

2014: Seattle, Washington

The 2014 FUSE Caucus took place on Friday, February 28, at 6:15-7:15pm, in Room 2A, Level 2 of the Washington State Convention Center.  

The twelfth annual caucus included FUSE chapter updates followed by a roundtable discussion. The featured topics were Conferences and Networking” and “The Mission of the Mission Statement.” National directors announced the date and location of the 3rd Annual FUSE Conference: November 6-7, 2014, at Bennington College.

2013: Boston, Massachusetts

Friday, March 8, at 6:00-7:15 PM in Room 110, Hynes Convention Center, Plaza Level

The eleventh annual meeting of undergraduate student editors and faculty advisers featured the panel topic, “Interdisciplinarity,” and participants from 27 schools discussed the interdisciplinary nature of undergraduate publishing, i.e. how and why to forge good relationships among departments.  National directors announced the date and location of the 2nd Annual FUSE Conference: November 7-8, 2013, at Davidson College.

2012: Chicago, Illinois

Friday, March 2, 2012, 10:30AM-11:45AM in the Joliet Room at Hilton Chicago, 3rd Floor

The tenth annual meeting of undergraduate student editors and faculty advisers showcased and explained the current organizational structure of FUSE, after which attendees nominated and elected officers for the second year of the National Board.   Student panelists from Widener University, Bennington University, and Susquehanna University addressed the panel topic, “How to Build a Reputation.” Audience members and panelists discussed ideas on making the undergraduate magazine desirable to create, to submit work to, and to read.

2011: Washington, DC

Friday, February 4, 2011, 10:30-11:45AM in the McDowell Formal Lounge at American University, Washington, DC

The ninth annual Forum for Undergraduate Student Editors (FUSE) caucus focused on the topic: “The Undergraduate Journal Online,” with panelists representing Widener University’s Blue Route, Bennington College’s anthology plain china, and Susquehanna University’s Susquehanna Review.  This meeting of undergraduate editors and their faculty advisors also elected the first FUSE National Board of Directors.

2010: Denver, Colorado

Friday, April 9, 2010, 9:30-10:45AM, in the Agate Room, Hyatt Regency Denver, 3rd Floor

Along with providing a meeting ground for undergraduate editors and their faculty advisors, the eighth annual Forum for Undergraduate Student Editors (FUSE) caucus  included a panel discussion on the topic: “Funding Undergraduate Literary Journals.” Presenting journals included the Susquehanna Review, Prairie Margins, and the Allegheny Review; significant time was allocated for audience discussion. The Forum called for greater participation from interested schools.

2009: Chicago, Illinois

Friday, February 13, 2009, 3:00-4:15PM, in Private Dining Room 2, 3rd Floor of Hilton Chicago

The seventh annual Forum for Undergraduate Student Editors (FUSE) caucus featured a panel discussion on the topic: “Selecting Editors and Pieces for an Undergraduate Literary Journal.” Panelists represented journals from Susquehanna University and Shippensburg University.  The Forum provided an update on its website, which includes a database of publishing internships, advice for start-up journals, and featured undergraduate literary magazines.

2008: New York, New York

Friday, February 1, 2008, in the Bryant Suite of the Hilton New York, 2nd Floor

Along with providing a meeting ground for undergraduate editors and their faculty advisors, the sixth annual Forum for Undergraduate Student Editors (FUSE) caucus included student and faculty representatives from Susquehanna University, Shippensburg University, and the University of Tampa. These panelists discussed the evolution of their undergraduate editing and publishing programs and publications. The Forum also provided an update on its membership and demonstrated the changes and improvements to its new website.

2007: Atlanta, Georgia

Friday, March 2, 9:00-10:15AM, in the North Court East of Hilton Atlanta, 2nd Floor

The fifth annual Forum for Undergraduate Student Editors (FUSE) caucus provided a meeting ground for undergraduate editors and their faculty advisors. FUSE provided an update on its membership, demonstrated the changes and improvements to its new website, which included browseable databases for graduate school, internships, employment, as well as discussion boards.  FUSE solicited ideas for new features. Participants were encouraged to bring copies of their magazines to display and swap.

2006: Austin, Texas

The fourth annual Forum for Undergraduate Student Editors (FUSE) caucus provided a meeting ground for undergraduate editors and their faculty advisors.  FUSE provided an update on its membership and conference planning, demonstrated the resources of its new website, which included browseable databases for graduate schools, internships, employment, as well as discussion boards.  FUSE solicited ideas for new features.  Participants were encouraged to bring copies of their magazines to display and swap.
